NORFOLK CHRISTIAN'S MATT MORELEWSKI HEADS ALL-TCIS TEAM

Norfolk Christian's Matt Morelewski was named honorary captain of the All-TCIS boys basketball team selected by the league coaches.

Morelewski, a 6-foot-3 senior, was a second team selection as a junior.

``He had good determination and worked really hard,'' Norfolk Christian coach Dave Walker said. ``Physically, he was an iron man and was able to play the whole game.''

Morelewski, the Ambassadors' leading scorer and rebounder, average 18.3 points and 11 boards per game. He was also a 74 percent free throw shooter and was 55 percent from the field.

``He gave us inside strength,'' Walker said. ``But he could either score inside or go out and hit the three.

``He did feel kind of beat up at times. Most teams collapsed into a zone or double down on him. He got most of his points on offensive rebounds. He just pursues the ball.''

Walker said that most teams were hesitant to send their big man out to cover Morelewski - a 40 percent 3-point shooter - on the perimeter.

Joining Morelewski on the first team are Kinte Smith, a Cape Henry junior; Nansemond-Suffolk senior Tim Doughtery; Walsingham senior Jai-T Randall and Hampton Christian senior Jimmy Moorman.

Smith led the conference in scoring with 21.4 points per game and led the Ambassadors to their best finish since the 1987-88 season.

Doughtery and Moorman were fourth in the TCIS scoring poll with 16.6 points per game.

Randall posted a 16.4 average as the league's fifth top scorer.

Norfolk Christian and Cape Henry were the only teams to place two players on the All-TCIS squad.

The Ambassadors' Sean Hildebrandt and the Dolphins' Chris DiNunzio earned second team honors.

Hildebrandt scored 354 points for a 15.6 average.

Earning second team honors were Catholic's Jimmy Whitehead, Peninsula Catholic's Scott Mackie and Greenbrier Christian's Heath Burris. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
