COCOA KRISPIES cereal has been on the market for decades. So has Count Chocula. Now, Kellogg's introduces Temptations.
Wonder why it took so long for manufacturers to come up with a vanilla-flavored cereal?
It contains lightly sweetened flakes, almond slices and oats. The oats are clustered, with lots of vanilla-flavored stuff similar to the frosting on cinnamon buns.
It's sweet, it's crunchy and it's decidedly vanilla.
The unofficial office tasters liked it. Once they tried it, they couldn't pass the box without having more. Which could pose a problem if your breakfast budget isn't large. We paid $2.99 for an 11-serving box - less than some cereals but more costly than corn flakes.
Temptations weighs in with most other presweetened cereals - 120 calories and 2 grams of fat in a 3/4-cup serving.
Temptations is also available in a Honey Roasted Pecan flavor. But we've had honey and nuts for a long time. SCREAM FOR NOT ICE CREAM
When is ice cream not ice cream? When it's a low-calorie frozen dessert.
According to Food Forum, a newsletter published by Pfizer Food Science Group, the Food and Drug Administration has changed the rules for labeling frozen confections.
Previously, frozen desserts sweetened with something other than nutritive carbohydrate sweeteners (sugar) had to be labeled ``artificially sweetened'' or ``imitation.'' For the next three years, ice cream with an alternative sweetener will be labeled ``ice cream sweetened with (whatever the sweetener is).''
After this three-year transition, manufacturers will be able to drop ``sweetened with'' from the label and simply include the sweetener in the ingredient statement.
Come 1998, even low-calorie frozen desserts will be called ice cream. HEALTHY SHOPPING
Farm Fresh is offering free make-overs on Saturday.
No, the supermar-ket chain has not expanded into fashion consulting. But it will make-over your grocery cart.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., dietitians from the Tidewater Dietetic Association will show interested shoppers how to select foods with less fat, cholesterol and sodium. They also will provide a checklist to help shoppers select foods for a balanced diet.
The consultations and store tours will be at the following Farm Fresh locations: 3353 Western Branch Blvd., Chesapeake; 701-A N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake; 4872 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach; 2110 Great Neck Shopping Center, Virginia Beach; 230 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk; and 1164 Big Bethel Road, Hampton. IRISH SPICE
If you want to add a little zip to your corned beef and cabbage this St. Patrick's Day, toss a pinch or two of red pepper flakes into the pot. It's a trick my mother picked up years ago at the Lone Pine Restaurant in Norfolk. ILLUSTRATION: LOS ANGELES TIMES/FILE PHOTO
All ice cream-like frozen desserts can be called ``ice cream'' - in
1998.
