Food Lion plans to open its fourth store in the city early next year.
The 20,000-square-foot supermarket will be on Godwin Boulevard and Kensington Drive, near the Lowe's hardware store.
It will be full-service store, with a delicatessen and bakery, said Brian Peace, public affairs manager for Food Lion Inc. of Salisbury, N.C., the company headquarters. He said the store will employ between 50 and 75 people.
``Construction is expected to begin by mid-year, pending final approval by city officials,'' he said. A lease was signed in December.
The supermarket will be on 5.3 acres that are expected eventually to hold a small shopping center.
``We expect to add something later, hopefully a drug store and some shops,'' said Larry Turner, president of Turner & Associates of Atlanta, a development company that has been working with Food Lion on the project.
``South Georgia Development of Atlanta is handling development of the area,'' he said.
Other Food Lion stores in Suffolk are on U.S. 58, Whitemarsh Road and Lee Farm Lane.
The company owns 1,039 stores, 222 in Virginia. It is the seventh largest supermarket chain in the United States. by CNB
