Henry C. Murden, longtime clerk for the city of Suffolk and a fixture in City Hall, is recovering well this week in a Norfolk hospital from surgery for a dangerous aneurysm.
Murden, 76, who currently serves as clerk of the Circuit Court and the City Council, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital last week after complaining of feeling ill at work. A co-worker drove him to his doctor.
After undergoing some tests, it was recommended he have surgery for a aneurysm in his stomach that appeared ready to burst, Murden said Tuesday from his hospital bed.
On Tuesday, Murden was moved down to a standard room of the hospital after spending several days in intensive care. He said he has been told he could be home in the next several days.
Murden, a former news reporter for the Suffolk News-Herald, has worked in City Hall for more than 40 years. To say he is a fixture there is an understatement, according to city employees who work with him. And everyone who has worked with Murden loves him, said City Manager Myles Standish.
``Every day that Henry is not here, we miss him terribly,'' Standish said.
Murden said the operation on the aneurysm was successful and he is recovering normally. In addition to the operation to repair the aneurysm, doctors also removed Murden's gall bladder. Ever jovial, Murden considered the operation ``preventive maintenance.'' by CNB
