David Korty and Susan Woodward, two Nansemond-Suffolk Academy eighth-graders, will compete in a statewide math contest for middle school students next Saturday.
Korty and Woodward were among the 40 area students who competed in the regional finals of the MATHCOUNTS contest late last month in Virginia Beach. The contest, which targets seventh- and eighth-graders, has attracted about 3 million students since it began in 1983, organizers said. Students compete in individual and team categories, testing their knowledge of geometry, algebra, statistics, probability and other areas.
The top scorers at the state competition in Richmond will advance to the national round, which will be held on April 28 in Washington.
Korty was the top individual scorer at the regional competition. Woodward earned the fourth highest individual score. The academy's team placed second overall, behind St. Gregory's School in Virginia Beach.
St. Gregory's team will compete in Richmond.
National MATHCOUNTS sponsors include the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Society of Professional Engineers and General Motors Foundation.
Students who are successful at the national competition earn scholarships for college. by CNB
