DINNER TO BENEFIT FIRE VICTIM'S FAMILY

Chesapeake residents, civic groups, churches and businesses are rallying behind the survivors of Glenn LeRoy Moser, who died last month in a fire that also destroyed his family's home in the Hickory area.

In an effort to help the family finance a new home, volunteers are organizing a chicken dinner fund-raiser Sunday at the Triple-R Ranch on Bunch Walnuts Road. The dinner will cost $5 per person, except for children 5 and under, who will eat free. The event will run from 1 to 5 p.m.

Vickie Woolard, a friend of the Moser family, started organizing the fund-raiser soon after the fatal accident when she found out Glenn Moser did not have life or homeowner's insurance.

Moser's wife, Mona, was also injured in the fire and the couple have six children that range in age from 14 to 26.

``I had no idea that I'd get such a response from the community,'' said Woolard. ``The Wallaceton Ruritan Club, the Triple-R Ranch and several churches volunteered to help organize and run the event. The response has been overwhelming.''

Days after the accident, Woolard opened a trust fund for the Moser family at NAE Federal Credit Union on North Battlefield Boulevard.

``People have been very generous,'' said Woolard. ``We've already collected about $13,000, but that's still not enough to build even the most modest house.''

Don Dunlap, executive director of the Triple-R Ranch and one of the fund-raiser's organizers, hopes the event will raise an additional $7,000 to $8,000.

``We're trying to get businesses to donate all the food, so 100 percent of the profits can go to the Moser family,'' said Dunlap.

Dunlap added that several businesses have already chipped in to help. He said a food distributor had donated rolls and slaw and local contractors were cleaning the debris from the Mosers' lot.

The 65-year-old Moser died Feb. 10 when he tried to pour a flammable liquid on a wood stove in his home and the container he was using caught on fire.
