OUT OF 208 wrestlers who competed, four from Chesapeake went the distance to claim state titles.
Great Bridge's Carl Perry ran through the season undefeated at 42-0 and defeated Mike Pereira of Stonewall Jackson by an 18-11 decision to earn the state championship in the 125-pound class. Perry, a junior, admitted after the tournament that he had been competing with torn cartilage in his right knee. Surgery was scheduled for today.
Western Branch's Byron Tucker also finished the season undefeated. The senior, a transfer from Dinwiddie High School, ran up a 38-0 record on the way to the state title at 152 pounds with a 16-7 major decision over Maury's Orlando Morton.
Perry's teammate, senior Billy Allred, trailed in his 160-pound championship match against Centerville's Jamie Castro, 6-4, midway through the second. Allred took the lead on a seldom-used leg move and never let Castro back into the match, winning 14-7. Allred finished with a 43-2 record.
The Bruins' Lee Butler started the tournament off on the right foot for Chesapeake wrestlers, scoring an 8-2 win over Great Bridge's Aaron Anton in the 103-pound final. Butler, a senior with a 4.0 grade point average at Western Branch, wrapped up the season with a 30-2 record. His only two losses came when he moved up to the 112 weight class during the season.
Two other local wrestlers made it to the finals. Western Branch's Sean Sanderlin (35-2) fell in the 145-pound weight class to three-time state champ Jeremy Ferry of Centerville, 7-0. Deep Creek's Ryan Baker narrowly missed a state title at 171 pounds with an 8-6 loss to Annandale's Scott Reese. MEMO: [For a related story, see page 12 of The Clipper for this date.]
