A community traffic safety program is joining forces with local bars and restaurants to fight drinking and driving on St. Patrick's Day.
The ongoing campaign, called DRIVE SMART Hampton Roads, was designed to promote safe and sober driving by USAA, an insurance company with offices in Norfolk. It is being co-sponsored by the Norfolk Naval Base, WNOR and WAFX radios and WAVY-TV 10.
The group announced Friday it will provide 14-ounce car mugs to participating bars and restaurants in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth and on the Naval Base.
On St. Patrick's Day, the establishments will fill the mugs with free nonalcoholic beverages for customers who volunteer to be designated drivers.
Restaurants and bars interested in the campaign can call Margaret Ware, DRIVE SMART coordinator at 459-4604, or Katy Hall at 459-5520. by CNB
