The fifth annual Crawford Bay Crew Classic will be held Saturday. About 400 student athletes from eight schools will participate.
Qualifying heats will begin at 10 a.m. The final will begin in the afternoon. The 2,000-meter course runs from the area of Mobil Oil toward Portside. Viewing from the seawall is free and open to the public.
Portsmouth and Western Branch families will provide homes from the students and their coaches. Olde Towne churches will host lunches for the teams on race day. Such hometown hospitality makes this regatta unique among rowing events.
Participating schools include George Washington, George Mason, Old Dominion, Richmond, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and William and Mary.
