Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown. . . .
As usual, that was the story as the Norfolk Bowling Association concluded its 41st annual championship tenpin tournament. Not a single winner from a year ago was able to repeat.
The coveted scratch all-events title went to Joey Cruz with 2,006. He had a blistering 761 (239, 266 and 256) in singles, 585 in doubles and 660 with his team. Cruz also captured the scratch singles championship.
The handicap all-events winner was Robert Edwards with 2,302. He fired 1,813 with a 489-pin handicap.
The handicap singles winner was Michael Jordan with 819. He had 627 with 192-pins handicap.
Tony Petrello and Teri Jeske won scratch doubles with 1,369. Petrello slammed 730 and Jeske had 639. The handicap title went to Garland Self and Edwards with 1,504, including 335 handicap.
The Company's Assets, composed of Jim Kunkle, John Brothers, Mike Luck and Bud Jacobson, topped the scratch team division with 2,634. Brothers led the way with 735, tossing games of 257, 221 and 257.
It was the highest individual series in team competition. Kunkle and Luck each posted 654 and Jacobson hit 591.
Leading almost from start to finish, Dream Team headed the handicap team division with 2,887. Team members were Edgardo Benedicto, Rolando Consolacion, Joey Arata and Orlando Samonte. Dream Team had a scratch total of 2,437, paced by Arata's 695 and Samonte's 601.
The best game posted in team play was Jim Wenzel's 289. Jeff Sanders' 267 was top game in doubles and the best in singles was Allen Baker's 270.
Bowler of the Week honors go to William McBeath.
Competing in the Monday Scratch Doubles Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake, McBeath barely missed his first 300 game.
He followed games of 211 and 176 with a 299.
A two-league regular, McBeath sported a 185 average in his best league last season.
Duckpin data - George Smith, one of the area qualifiers for the upcoming $15,000 Duckpin Classic in Rhode Island, picked up more than traveling expenses by winning the eighth annual Oneil Wynne Classic at Bowlarama. Smith had a seven-game handicap total of 1,182 to pocket $1,000. Runner-up Lynette Narciso was seven pins back and won $500. Third prize of $250 went to Wynne with 1,161. Walter Laughon was fourth with 1,154 and Herman Gaines fifth with 1,152. Smith is the eighth different bowler to win the tournament in its eight years. . . . Wes Garriott took the lead after two rounds of the 21 Tournament at Victory Lanes. Garriott led the second round with 886, totaling 1,693 for both. David Driskell moved into second place with 1,611. The third round is scheduled on Sunday, April 2. . . . Tom Gregory chalked up a record 190 game in the Sunday School League. . . . Robin Long slammed a women's record series of 382 in the Monday Elimination Doubles League. . . . Betty's Barber Shop, powered by Raymond Askew's 431, won its closing position match to capture the second round in the Industrial League. Ketchum's Glass was the first-round winner. . . . Eight-year-old Rachael Schumacher, who averages 81 in the Victory Youth League, rolled a 132 game and 341 series. In the same league Brian Long pitched a 406 series and Jason McCready has banged out 801 in his last six games. . . . Lu Arnette boosted her 108 average with a 383 series in the Monday Morning Mixed League. Also in this league, 92-average Tracie Sheffield registered a 146 game.
Tenpin topics - The Portsmouth Women's Bowling Association city tournament got under way at Scott Center. The tournament concludes today. Laura Zimmerman is the handicap frontrunner in all-events with 1,919. She also paired with Diana Wetmore for 1,279 to take the handicap lead in doubles. The scratch all-events leader is Nollie Sutton with 1,549. Handicap singles leader is Cynthia Jeske with 672. The Easy Rollers took the handicap team lead with 2,433, hitting 1,838 scratch. . . . The National Collegiate Regional Tournament will be held at Indian River Lanes on March 18-19 with competition on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Qualifiers will advance to the Intercollegiate Bowling Championship at Knoxville, Tenn., in April. Dick Barber is serving as local coordinator. Here's a chance to see the best bowlers in the collegiate ranks on the East Coast. . . . Bobby Jordan notched a 201 triplicate in the Friday Mixers League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Amy Waller fired a 266 game in her 639 series in the Military Doubles League at Pinboy's of Military. Waller averages 183. . . . Century Club newcomers are Robert Weeks (129 average, 234 game) in the Kings & Queens League at Indian River, Bill Brown (153 average, 266 game) in the Big Chiefs League at IR and George Wasenius (147 average, 252 game) in the Friday Mixers League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Nick Lewis, 14, fired his first 600 series as he soared to 669 behind games of 245, 253 and 171 in the Saturday Junior/Major/Senior League at Pinboy's of Western Branch. He averages only 159. . . . Ken Shick smacked a 279 game en route to his 776 series in the Friday Mixers League. . . . Big Brothers/Big Sisters of South Hampton Roads are looking for volunteers to participate in the 14th annual Bowl For Kids' Sake, scheduled on March 25 at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. The event is sponsored by Sentara Health System. Volunteers should call Diana Robertson at 490-5437. Last year Bowl For Kids' Sake raised $35,000 and the goal this year is $50,000. . . .
