A two-alarm fire heavily damaged an apartment building early Saturday, leaving several residents homeless and sending two firefighters and a resident to the hospital.
The fire, in the 9500 block of 24th Bay St., was reported at 3:33 a.m. It started on the first floor of the three-story building and spread to the apartments on the upper floor. Several residents had to be rescued.
The fire was was declared under control in a half-hour. Investigators blamed its cause on careless disposal of smoking materials.
Two firefighters were taken to the DePaul Medical Center, one for treatment of exhaustion and the other for an injured hand. One resident also was treated there for smoke inhalation.
Three apartments were heavily damaged by fire and three more had extensive smoke and water damage.
The Red Cross was assisting in relocating at least three families.
