A man who was apparently attempting suicide was critically injured Saturday when he jumped from a highway overpass onto Interstate 264.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken by the Nightingale Helicopter Ambulance to the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He suffered severe head injuries.
The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Drive interchange of I-264. Witnesses said the man jumped from the bridge into the eastbound lanes.
The interstate was closed briefly so the helicopter could land.
