Captain Frederick Henry Wahlig, USN, Ret., 84, of the 6100 block of Eastwood Terrace, died March 12, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
Captain Wahlig was a native of Shelton, Conn., and was the son of the late Alexander and Marie Flynn Wahlig. He was a Roman Catholic.
Captain Wahlig was a 1933 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and first commanded the USS Mackerel and then commanded the USS Grouper during World War II. He commanded LSD Ron II based in Norfolk and retired from the Navy in 1963 as the Commanding Officer of the Norfolk Naval Station. Following his distinguished Navy career, he became an executive with The Tidewater Construction Company and more recently was the administrator of the Chrysler Museum for nine years during it's Early Planning of the New Museum. He was member of the Retired Officers Association and a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Norfolk, and a former board member of the Fleet Reserve Association; honorary member of the Boys Club of Norfolk; Norfolk Yacht and Country Club; and New York Yacht Club.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nancy Land Wahlig of Norfolk; his children, Lee W. Ossen and her husband, Howard of Virginia Beach and Frederick H. Wahlig Jr. and his wife, Nancy of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, James Wahlig of Long Island, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, William F. Rountree III and Emma Kathleen Wahlig.
A Joyful Mass of the Resurrection service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Victory Chapel of Naval Station Norfolk. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys Club of Norfolk or the Union Mission.
