PRAISE FOR CHIEF HIGH

Police Chief Melvin High has been on the job in Norfolk for less than two years. In that time, I have had the opportunity to work with him on several projects, including Norfolk Crime Line. Chief High is extremely supportive of community efforts such as Crime Line, and he is quick to commend the many volunteers who constitute the board of directors.

The results of a recent police-union survey criticizing Chief High and his leadership ability are suspect. I cannot imagine that morale problems among police officers occurred overnight. I believe Chief High is working very hard to make the Norfolk Police Department responsive to community needs. He exhibits a solid management style and has been successful in getting in touch with the communities and the neighborhoods of Norfolk. I consider him an approachable and effective leader, and I think the city is lucky to have him at the helm.
