CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: ***************************************************************** Former Norfolk Police Capt. (now Nags Head Police Chief) Charles Cameron supports American Legion Post 327's program honoring Officers of the Year. However, he was not present at this year's awards banquet. An editing error in Don Gotta Jr.'s letter, published Wednesday, mistakenly placed him there. Correction published Friday, March 17, 1995 on page A20. ***************************************************************** HONORING OUR POLICE

Recent news stories have taken note of the low morale in the Norfolk Police Department.

On Jan. 24, American Legion Post 327 held its 26th annual Law and Order Night to honor the police, fire, deputy sheriff and paramedic of the year. Honorees are nominated, screened and selected by their respective departments without any influence from our post.

This year, Norfolk police Officers David Baker and Scott Sergeant were selected as officers of the year (nearly 200 felony arrests) by their peers.

On the night of the awards ceremony Officers Baker and Sergeant, accompanied by their wives and in-laws and the other honorees and guests, were treated to a pre-awards dinner. No ranking Norfolk police officers were present except for retired Chief Henry Hensen, his wife Jane and former Norfolk Capt. (now Nags Head Chief) Charles Cameron.
