A 39-year-old Norfolk woman, who had been in a coma since Sept. 30 after being beaten, has died, police said Tuesday.
Joyce Johnson of the 2900 block of Hollister Ave. died in a Richmond hospital Thursday afternoon. Police suspect she was beaten by her boyfriend, Russell Whitfield, 30, of the 6600 block of Whitehorn Drive.
Whitfield has been held in the Norfolk City Jail since December on a malicious wounding charge related to the beating, police said. No further charges have been filed against him.
Police are investigating the cause of death.
