Manufacturers of about 10 million zippered bean-bag chairs are recalling them because of a hazard to children who could choke on the stuffing.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission learned of five deaths and at least 12 other cases in which children have inhaled or ingested some of the bean-bag filling, a spokeswoman said.
The zippered bags were sold nationwide through 1994.
Consumers should immediately stop using any bean-bag chairs with zippers, the CPSC said. They can call the commission hot line at 800-638-2772 for repair instructions.
Among the nine manufacturers is Gold Medal Inc. of Richmond.
