Samuel Swersky, of the Hague Towers, Brambleton Ave., died Mar. 21, 1995, in his home.
Mr. Swersky was born May 22, 1901, in Norfolk, where he was a life long resident. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dena Marcus Swersky, in 1986. Mr. Swersky was a regional sales manager with James G. Gill Coffee Co. until 1946 when he opened Swift Construction Co., now know as Swift Garages Inc., from which he retired in 1989. He was a founder of the Better Business Bureau of Norfolk, and was a generous benefactor to the support of many Jewish institutions as well as civic and medical organizations. He was a charter member of the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia and a member of Congregation Beth El for over 60 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Selma R. Swersky and Frances S. Stanton; a son-in-law, Arthur D. Stanton, all of Norfolk; a sister, Etta S. Bloom of Portsmouth; a brother, Benjamin H. Swersky of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Stephen B. Swersky of Norfolk, Kira L. Swersky of Chesapeake, Bradley K. Stanton of Virginia Beach, and Patricia R. Stanton of San Francisco, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren.
A chapel service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Jacob Tessler. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.
The family will receive friends at 509 Brackenridge Ave., Norfolk, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sam and Dena Swersky Philanthropic Fund of the Tidewater Jewish Foundation, 7300 Newport Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23505, or to a charity of choice.
