GARLAND E. BENTON

Garland E. Benton, retired executive of Southern States Cooperative, died Friday, Mar. 17, 1995, at his home.

A native of Franklin, he was the son of the late George E. and Irene Daughtrey Benton. He was with Southern States for 47 years as Manager of dairy and livestock services at the time of his retirement. Following his retirement in 1982, he served with the Volunteer Overseas Cooperative Assistance Program as an Agricultural Consultant in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Egypt, the West Bank and Poland. He served as a leader for People to People Programs in Eastern Europe prior to the fall of Communism. He was a member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church, Manchester Lodge No. 14, a Past President of the Manchester Lions Club and Willow Oaks Country Club.

Mr. Benton is survived by his wife, Irene P. Benton; a brother, William J. Benton of Franklin; a sister, Elizabeth Zoellner of Bethel, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward M. Benton.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Westover Hills United Methodist Church in Richmond. Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Westover Hills United Methodist Church.
