WORKER HURT IN FALL INTO BRIDGE MANHOLE

A worker was injured Tuesday afternoon when he fell into a manhole on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel near Fisherman's Island. He was taken by air ambulance to Virginia Beach General Hospital.

The worker, Cooke Goffigan, was listed in stable condition Tuesday night.

Goffigan was part of a crew working to fix a lighting problem on the bridge when he fell into the manhole about 4 p.m., said Lorraine Smith, director of public relations for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Goffigan was taken to the hospital primarily as a precaution against hypothermia, Smith said.
