``TR'' HEADS TO SEA: More than 12,000 sailors and Marines leave East Coast ports today for a six-month Mediterranean deployment. They are aboard the 14 ships and submarines in the carrier Theodore Roosevelt battle group and Kearsarge amphibious ready group. They will relieve a group headed by the carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower and amphibious assault ship Nassau. Leaving from Norfolk are the Roosevelt, cruisers Mississippi and Ticonderoga, frigate Kauffman, destroyer Arleigh Burke, attack submarines Key West and Montpelier, helicopter carrier/dock landing ship Kearsarge, transport dock Nashville, and dock landing ship Pensacola. Also, the submarine Batfish, from New London, Conn.; combat support ship Seattle, from Earle, N.J.; frigate Hawes, from Charleston, S.C., and cruiser Hue City, from Mayport, Fla.

CHRISTENING

The Navy's last new Los Angeles-class submarine, the Cheyenne, will be christened in ceremonies Saturday night at Newport News Shipbuilding. The 7 p.m. ceremony is open to the public and will feature a fireworks show. Enter at the 46th Street gate.

DEPLOYMENT

The Norfolk-based destroyer Caron leaves today for a three-month deployment to Northern Europe. It will serve as a command ship in a multinational exercise, Blue Harrier.

DECOMMISSIONING

The Coast Guard cutter Point Arena was decommissioned Monday after 29 years of service, all based out of the Little Creek Coast Guard Station. It will be replaced at the Little Creek Station by the cutter Point Bonita, from Babylon, N.Y.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Rear Adm. Donald A. Dyer, commander Training Command Atlantic Fleet, will retire Thursday in ceremonies at Norfolk Naval Air Station. Capt. John P. Jeffcoat will become interim commander. In his 30-year career, Dyer has commanded three ships and Destroyer Squadron 22, and served with the Joint Middle East Task Force and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic.

CHANGING UNIFORMS

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ronald R. Fogelman has approved 55 changes to Air Force uniforms. These changes include:

Air Force members can now wear pull-over sweater without a tie or tab.

Women can wear cuff links on the long-sleeved shirt.

Fogelman did not adopt the following suggestions:

Allowing officers to wear swords with service dress.

Designing a shorts set with matching shoes and socks for summer wear.
