The Suffolk Fire Department will loan carbon monoxide detectors for home use.
The devices may be borrowed for seven days to detect the possible presence of carbon monoxide.
The gas is of particular concern because it is odorless, colorless and tasteless and can be emitted from standard home appliances and heating sources.
Carbon monoxide, absorbed through the lungs and blood stream, inhibits the blood's capacity to transport oxygen throughout the blood. Exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can kill within minutes.
The gas also may cause headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath and nausea, and can resort in a coma, permanent brain damage and even death.
The Fire Marshal's Office has a limited supply of detectors, offered first-come, first-served.
To participate in the program, go to the Suffolk Fire Department, 400 Market St., to sign a loan form and receive instructions. Call 539-8787. by CNB
