AMY CROSS DOING FINE IN THREE SPORTS

Notes on a frayed white cuff. . . .

Most college athletes find it difficult to participate in two sports but former Churchland High School star Amy Cross is a three-sport participant at Averett College.

Cross, who went to Averett on an academic grant, is now a member of the Lady Cougars tennis team. She ran cross country and was a starter on the basketball team.

A sophomore with a straight A average in her first college year, Cross averaged 7.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in the recent basketball season. She was an All-Southeastern District performer at Churchland.

She helped Averett win the Dixie Conference championship in tennis last year.

``I wish I had 10 more with her work ethic,'' said Averett women's basketball coach Kathy Bocock.

Former Alliance Christian baseball standout David Mitchell is wielding a big bat for Christopher Newport.

The Captains won 14 of their first 16 games, already posting six victories more than last year's team managed all season.

Mitchell, a freshman outfielder, is one of six players on the team batting over .400. He sports a .417 average.

The Christopher Newport players are running the bases like never before. In nine games they broke the all-time season record of 62. They now have 98 steals in 109 attempts. Mitchell has 11 of the thefts.

Sam Reynolds is the new president of I.C. Norcom Athletes and he would like to invite Norcom alumni to attend the club meetings every third Sunday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Olympian Sports Club.

Portsmouth Invitational Tournament officials point out that it's possible to secure tickets this year for less than half the going price.

Tickets at the door for the April 5-8 tournamment at Churchland High School are $6.25.

A group can purchase a block of 100 tickets for $300.

Ken Young, the president of the Norfolk Tides, will be the featured speaker on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Tidewatchers Booster Club meeting. The meeting will be held at the Diamond Restaurant on the corner of Newtown and Kempsville roads.

For information, call William McKinney at 523-0856.

The roasters for the dinner program recognizing longtime Virginian-Pilot sports writer Russell Borjes, who retired at the end of the year, will be Jack Mounie, Leo Antonucci, Booty Baker, Howard Jacobson and Square Edmonds.

The event will be held at the Ambassador Club on April 14 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be obtained by calling Rabbit Howard at 484-7920 or Buck Campbell at 471-6691. by CNB
