On March 17, a second student at Norfolk Academy was diagnosed with meningococcemia. All students, faculty and staff were advised to take rifampin as a precaution.
There was not enough rifampin in the area to provide doses for everyone, so Dave Halla of Gray's Pharmacy in Norfolk ordered some from Maryland. He had this delivered by courier, whose cost he did not pass on to his customers.
The medication was not to be delivered until after 11:00 p.m., so Dave, his wife Sylvia and his staff kept Gray's open until after midnight to service all the customers waiting there. They opened at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday to help those who did not pick up their prescriptions on Friday night.
On behalf of all the Norfolk Academy families who benefited from Dave's generosity (many of whom were not his regular customers), I would like to express gratitude to Dave, his wife and his staff for their community spirit and their willingness to go way beyond ``the call of duty.''
