I was saddened to read of the death of D. A. Taylor (news, March 21), the Norfolk Academy student who had been infected with the meningococcal bacteria at a track meet a month ago. His athletic accomplishments were fully detailed in the article, but you gave short shrift to his academic accomplishments.
As a graduate of Norfolk Academy myself (class of '77), I am acutely aware of the emphasis placed on academic excellence. I did not know D. A. Taylor, but I do know this: He was a smart kid. Norfolk Academy requires a high scholastic achievement for everyone, including star athletes. You praised D.A.'s athletic prowess, but his academic record should be celebrated, too.
