The Virginia Beach amphitheater is sure to be a hotly debated issue as far as the benefits and drawbacks are concerned. This letter, however, is not to debate whether or not to build the amphitheater but to propose that the access roads to the amphitheater be redesigned.
The proposed design (as depicted in your newspaper) for the amphitheater shows an ``amphitheater access road'' which leads traffic to Princess Anne Road. Princess Anne Road is currently a four-lane road with a 50-miles-per-hour speed limit through this area. This proposed access road would generate another traffic signal on Princess Anne, which would be used by Landstown schools as well, so the signal would not be used only during concerts. I think it would be better to improve Landstown Road to both Princess Anne Road and Salem Road. Traffic could be moved via a five-lane road to Princess Anne with two left-turn lanes, two straight lanes and one right turn lane; and a two-lane road south to Salem Road, where a left and right turn could be put in, with a light if necessary.
If we are going to build a large amphitheater, let's try to keep the day-to-day traffic moving better and not install another signal on a large, currently uncluttered thoroughfare.
