VIRGINIA POWER BUILDING RADIOACTIVE FUEL STORAGE SITE

Virginia Power says it will build a $92 million temporary storage site for spent fuel at its North Anna nuclear power plant. The federal Department of Energy was to have in place a national storage site for the spent fuel from the nation's 109 nuclear reactors by 1998, but that project is not expected to be completed until 2010 at the earliest, utility officials said. The utility announced Wednesday that it will ask the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in May for a license to build the storage site at its Louisa County plant. The highly radioactive used fuel is currently stored underwater in a pool at the nuclear power plant. Brian Wakeman, a Virginia Power staff engineer, said that the pool will be full by 1999. It has been used since 1979. The company wants to build an above-ground storage facility that would be operational in the summer of 1998. by CNB
