The House of Representatives is preparing to vote on the Child Protection Block Grant (HR4). It should be rejected.
The system now in place to protect children could use some evaluation and reorganization, but, typically, systemic changes are made after careful study with input from the public. To pass a program that would literally disassemble the existing child-protection system, reduce its funding, and eliminate federal regulation at the same time that a reduction in AFDC is being implemented is irresponsible and would result in the abandonment of many of our nation's children. This would inevitably result in increased child abuse and neglect and injuvenile crime.
The existing Child Protection programs must be maintained until such a time that a comprehensive child and family friendly federal initiative for children is proposed. Children cannot protect themselves or lobby for themselves and are not responsible for their situation. Contact your federal representatives and ask them to protect our children.
