Walter Virgil Buttrill, of the 1400 block of Waylon Ave., died Tuesday morning, March 28, 1995, in Norfolk.
He was born in Brownsville, Texas, and was the son of the late Ilma Bright and Walter Virgil Buttrill Sr. Mr. Buttrill was a retired leasing manager for several car dealerships and banks in the Tidewater area. He was a 1943 graduate of Texas A & M University and served as an officer in the U.S. Army. He served his country from 1943 until 1958. Walter was active in Larchmont United Methodist Church, serving his Lord as Head Usher for 12 years.
He was an Eagle Scout, having won the ``Gates Award'' as an outstanding scout in Houston, Texas, and also served the Boy Scouts on the Tidewater Council. Walter joined the Norfolk Host Lions Club in 1951. In the years 1986 and 1994 he was awarded the prestigous ``Lion of the Year Award,'' and in 1994 he was made a ``Melvin Jones Fellow,'' the highest award in Lionism. His greatest joy was serving as chairman of the Hearing Committee of his Lions Club which gives hearing aids to the needy.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret McIntyre Buttrill; a daughter, Margaret ``Pegge'' B. Flaherty of Richmond, Va.; a son, William ``Mac'' Walter Buttrill of Whitman, Md.; and other beloved family and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, 1995, in Larchmont United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hearing Committee of the Norfolk Host Lions Club c/o Ben Hogwood, 206 W.
