FC GIRLS GET 1ST SOCCER WIN OF '95

After being humbled by the defending state champion and last year's runner-up, the First Colonial girls' soccer team was in search of its first win and a much-needed confidence boost.

Great Bridge seemed only too happy to comply.

The Patriots, ranked third in South Hampton Roads, rode their bench early in the first half and rotated fresh players into the game throughout, wearing down the host Wildcats in a 4-0 victory Tuesday.

Four players scored for First Colonial (1-2), which outshot Great Bridge, 18-10.

``We had a little trouble at first, but it's all coming together for us now,'' said senior Krissy Castle.

The Patriots dropped their opener, 4-0, to defending state champion Robinson High School. They then lost 5-0 to Woodbridge, which finished second in state last year.

Against Great Bridge, Catherine deGruy put the Patriots on the board early in the first half. Freshman midfielder Sarah Hirst tapped the ball over to deGruy on the right side, and deGruy drilled a shot from 15 yards out that ducked under the crossbar just out of the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Stacey Collins.

With less than 15 minutes left before intermission, First Colonial was awarded a free kick from 12 yards out.

Castle tapped the ball to Avery Willis, who shot wide left.

But the Patriots were given a second try when the referee ruled that the ball had never been stationary.

First Colonial then used the identical play, with Willis tapping the ball to Castle. Castle one-timed a shot into the upper left corner for a 2-0 Patriots lead.

Willis scored soon after to give First Colonial a 3-0 lead at the half. Katie Bolcar scored on a shot that tipped off keeper Anna Oliver's hands with 10 minutes left. ILLUSTRATION: L. TODD SPENCER
