STATE ADDED 85,000 NEW JOBS DURING '94, 3RD HIGHEST IN DECADE

About 85,000 new jobs were added in the state in 1994, the third largest net gain in the past decade, according to preliminary figures reported by the Commerce Department.

The figure equals the amount of new positions brought into the state minus those that left the state or were eliminated, Commerce Secretary Dave Phillips told the House Business and Labor Committee Wednesday.

The largest increase in recent history was in 1993, when 129,000 jobs were added, said Watts Carr, the state's recent chief business recruiter. The state recorded 110,000 new jobs in 1984.

Phillips gave some of the credit for the jobs to the state's network of regional economic development partnerships, and asked panel members to support their continued funding.

The General Assembly last year provided the money to expand the public-private commissions from three to seven, encompassing all 100 counties.

``Give us time to let people learn about it and work with it,'' Phillips said. ``Nobody feels everyone is getting a fair shake. Regionalism is giving us a fair shake.'' by CNB
