A high school student was critically wounded Monday when he accidentally shot himself in the head, police said.
The Kempsville High School ninth-grader - Travon Russell of the 200 block of Weller Blvd. - put the muzzle of a .38-caliber revolver to the side of his head and pulled the trigger as part of a game he was playing, police spokesman Mike Carey said.
The bullet passed through the boy's head.
Police are investigating what game Russell was playing, Carey said.
Police questioned two other teens who were in the townhome at the time of the shooting, but no charges were filed because police were satisfied the shooting was an accident, Carey said.
No adults were home when Russell was shot.
The shooting happened shortly after 3 p.m. in a townhome off Baxter Road in the 500 block of Mulligan Drive, which borders Kempsville Greens Golf Course.
Russell, 14, was visiting a friend at the residence. He and the two other teens were playing with the gun, which belonged to one of the townhome's adult residents.
Rescue workers loaded the wounded student onto a golf cart and motored him to a field where the Nightingale air ambulance was waiting.
Russell was on life support at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as of late Monday.
