The Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council will conduct a ``Family After-Work Party'' Thursday in observance of Arbor Day.
The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rivercrest Recreation Center, 1001 River Walk Parkway. Mayor William E. Ward and other community leaders will plant a ceremonial tree, and poet James Scott will recite his humorous works at 6 p.m.
Staff members of Chesapeake public libraries will present ``A Very Hungry Caterpillar,'' a story-telling session for children, at 5:15 p.m. While the children enjoy the story, moms and dads can attend a presentation by Ken Spencer of the TCC Horticultural Department called ``In Celebration of Trees.'' Magician Lou Page will perform at 6:30 p.m.
There will be arts and crafts activities for children, a variety of food vendors and plant- and book-sharing booths, where participants can trade old books or plants.
Chesapeake master gardeners will be at four locations in the city to give away seedlings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crab apple, green ash, river birch, loblolly pine, redbud and dogwood seedlings will be available at Chesapeake Square Mall, Portsmouth Boulevard in Western Branch; Las Gaviotas Shopping Center, 1200 block of Cedar Road; Parkview Shopping Center, 1701 Greenbrier Parkway; and Woodford Square Shopping Center, 701 N. Battlefield Blvd.
The activities will be sponsored by the Environmental Improvement Council, Chesapeake Council of Garden Clubs, Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission, Chesapeake Libraries and Research Services, Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department, Virginia Department of Forestry and Alpha Zeta Lambda chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Tidewater Community College.
