Ethel Branchcomb Ward, 73, of the 3700 block of Wedgefield Ave., a retired social studies teacher in the Chesapeake Public Schools after 30 years, died April 4, 1995, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mrs. Ward, a native of Norfolk, taught at Crestwood High School and retired from Indian River High School. She was a faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, and was active in many phases of the church, including the Women's Club and the Jolly Old Youth Club. She was also a member of Alpha Chi Chapter, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Inc., Chesapeake Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and the Virginia Education Association.
Survivors include her husband, Jesse E. Ward of the home; a daughter, Vanessa W. Burke of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Adrianne Burke and Orion Burke; a devoted son-in-law, Kermit O. Burke; a loving niece, Beverly Perkins Spainhour and husband, Sterling Spainhour Sr.; and two grand-nephews, Brian and Sterling Spainhour Jr.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in First Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Calvin James. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
