Emmett Hiram Rawles Jr., 77, of 813 Dumville Ave., owner and operator of Emmett H. Rawles Jr. Real Estate, died April 8, 1995.
A native of Suffolk, he was the son of the late Emmett Hiram and Katherine Harrell Rawles. Mr. Rawles was a member of Suffolk Christian Church, where he was a member of the Baraca Sunday School Class. A former longtime chairman of the Board of Trustees and former chairman of the Finance Committee, he was a 1935 graduate of Suffolk High School, attended Hampden Sydney College in 1936 and then attended Randolph-Macon College. He served 4 1/2 years in the Army Air Corps during WWII and obtained the rank of captain. He served on the Virginia National Bank Board in Suffolk, was the president of the Suffolk Natural Gas Co., a former director of the Suffolk Rotary Club, a board member of the Suffolk Charitable Golf Association and a past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Rawles was a member of the Princess Anne and Cedar Point country clubs, Suffolk Elks Lodge 685 and the American Legion 57. He was a partner and president of the Holland Supply Co., where as a young man, he built steel storage tanks for the handling of bulk peanuts instead of using burlap bags, as was the custom at that time.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Miller Rawles; three stepdaughters, Lynn R. Cross and her husband, James R. Cross of Virginia Beach, Terry R. Conwell and her husband, Bob Conwell of Suffolk, and Karen R. Robinson of Norfolk; and four step-grandchildren, Carrie L. Cross, Cody, Anna and Ryder Conwell.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Suffolk Christian Church by the Rev. Bruce Havens and Dr. Robert B. Marr. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N.
