Construction has begun on a 45,000-square-foot Hannaford Food and Drug Superstore in the Pembroke area.
The superstore, one of 188 owned by Hannaford Brothers Co., a grocery store chain based in Maine, will feature a pharmacy, seafood department, deli and wine and cheese area.
The store is being built across from Builders Square off Corporate Park Lane, between Cleveland Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard. It will be finished by the first of next year, said Gerald Divaris, the real estate developer who sold the lot to Hannaford Brothers.
The store is one of two new chains moving into the area and vying for a piece of the Hampton Roads grocery store market.
Harris Teeter, another upscale grocery store based in Matthews, N.C., plans to open a new store in Princess Anne Plaza sometime within the next year. by CNB
