Elizabeth Gore Barnes, 88, died of pneumonia on April 12 in Louisville, Ky.
She spent her childhood in Norfolk, where her father, William A. Gore, was manager of the Virginian Railroad. She met her husband, Robert McCumber Barnes, at her sister's wedding rehearsal dinner in Norfolk - when Ensign Barnes switched their placecards to sit by her. They celebrated their 60th anniversary at their home in Washington just before Capt. Barnes died in 1991. Mrs. Barnes shepherded their two daughters on Navy tours in the Philippines and China. After Pearl Harbor, she returned to raise her daughters. Both debuted in Norfolk.
The former Elizabeth Pegram Gore graduated from Maury High School, attended Hollins and was graduated from Cornell in Latin and Greek. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Colonial Dames of America in Virginia, Daughters of the Founders and Patriots, Huguenot Society and Magna Charta Dames.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. April 19 at Arlington National. Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth B. Covell of Louisville and Roberta B. Ankenbrandt of Irvine, Calif.; brother, Capt. John A. Gore of McLean; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Freemason Street Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member.
