An Air Force F-15 jet on a night-training mission 50 miles southeast of Wilmington, N.C., apparently went down and was reported missing Tuesday night, Coast Guard spokesman Joe Dye said.
The plane, based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C., was reported missing at 10:15 p.m. It was on the mission with three other F-15s and a KC-135 plane.
The pilot and co-pilot aboard the missing plane were not yet identified.
A Coast Guard helicopter and a C-130 plane, both from Elizabeth City, were searching for the missing jet late Tuesday night. They were joined by a Marine Corps helicopter from Cherry Point and the Coast Guard cutter Block Island, Dye said.
