Jackson Moseley Powell, 79, a resident of Boykins, died Thursday, April 20, 1995, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.
He was born in Boykins and was the son of the late William H. Sr. and Blanche Moseley Powell. He was a member of Boykins Baptist Church, where he served as a Life Deacon, former Superintendent of the Sunday School, and as a teacher of numerous classes. He was a former member of the Boykins Lions Club and the Boykins American Legion Post (NU)276.
Following his graduation from the University of Richmond in 1934, he was a professor in the Language Department of Chowan College from 1939-1941. He served in the U.S. Army as a speech instructor at Fort Lee in Petersburg from 1942-1945. Following his discharge from the Army, he was co-owner with his brother, of Powell's Supermarket, Boykins. He began his teaching career in 1953 at Boykins High School. In 1956 he became principal of Boykins Elementary School, a position he held until 1967 when he was appointed Director of Instruction of Southampton County Public Schools. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Paul D. Camp Community College and had received his masters degree in Education from the University of Virginia.
He is survived by a niece, Mrs. Sylvia P. Edwards and sister-in-law, Mrs. Eloise N. Powell, both of Boykins, and was brother of the late W. Hugh Powell Jr. and Frances Powell Britt.
Funeral services will be held in Boykins Baptist Church on Saturday, April 22, at 3 p.m., by the Rev. Benjamin Thomas. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mrs. Sylvia P. Edwards, 33256 Pine Crest Drive, Boykins, from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening. Memorial donations may be made to Boykins Baptist Church. Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, is handling arrangements.
