PILOT IN FAIR CONDITION: An Air Force pilot whose F-15E jet crashed into the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday night was in fair condition at New Hanover County Hospital Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The pilot, Capt. Brian Udell of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, was rescued by Coast Guard crews shortly after midnight Wednesday. His jet disappeared from radar during an air-to-air training mission about 50 miles south of Morehead City.
A second crewman in the plane, Capt. Dennis White, was killed.
White, a weapon systems officer, had been stationed at Seymour Johnson in Goldsboro since 1990.
Before his duty at Seymour Johnson, White had flown RF-4Cs and was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas and at Zweibrucken air base in Germany.
White was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and had more than 2,200 flying hours. His hometown was Lees Summit, Mo.
A board of officers is investigating the crash. Air Force spokesmen said Thursday that they had not decided whether to try to retrieve the submerged plane.
KILL DEVIL HILLS
FIRE HOUSE BREAK-IN: Firefighters are seeking donations to replace equipment lost in a break-in at a trailer used to simulate fire conditions.
The robbery at the Albemarle Fire Safety House was discovered last week. The Kill Devil Hills Police Department is investigating. A smoke generator, valued at $2,000, was stolen. There also was damage to the trailer's interior.
The trailer was being housed at the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department at the time of the break-in.
The safety house is used in six North Carolina counties to educate children on fire safety and prevention.
More than 24,000 children have benefited from the house, including 6,700 in Dare County.

TOP VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT: The Dare Voluntary Action Center is accepting nominations for the DVAC Outstanding Volunteer Award and the 1995 Governor's Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
The DVAC awards will be presented in June and the Governor's Awards will be presented in fall.
The awards are designed to recognize individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service.
Individuals and groups from public, non-profit organizations as well as businesses may be nominated for the awards.
Nomination forms may be obtained from the DVAC office in the Chamber of Commerce building in Kill Devil Hills, or by calling (919) 480-0500. The application deadline is May 26.
RALEIGH
BASNIGHT HONORED: The North Carolina Recreation and Park Society has honored Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight of Manteo with the Outstanding Legislative Award for his efforts on behalf of parks and recreation in North Carolina.
During last year's legislative session, the society said, Basnight was instrumental in the establishment of the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund.
The fund provides money to the state parks system for land acquisition, capital improvements, repairs and renovations; matching grants to local governments for park and recreation facilities; and funds for coastal beach access.
ELIZABETH CITY
VFW AUXILIARY TO HOLD SALE: The Elizabeth City VFW Auxiliary will sponsor a yard and bake sale Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. at the VFW Post.
Tables can be rented for $5; call 338-2828 or 264-3589 to reserve space.
The post will also sell barbecue plates for $4 beginning about 11 a.m. Barbecue by the pound will be available at $4.50.
The post will hold an auxiliary meeting at 8 p.m. Monday.
DEMOCRATIC CONVENTIONS: The Pasquotank County Democratic Party will hold its convention at 10 a.m. Saturday in Courtroom A of the county courthouse.
Currituck Democrats will meet at the Currituck Courthouse at 1 p.m. Saturday.
DULCIMER CLASSES: The Museum of the Albemarle at Elizabeth City is sponsoring the workshop, ``Learning to Play the Dulcimer.''
Bert Berry, who handcrafts the musical instruments, will be the instructor.
The workshop will be held Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the museum. The workshop is free and dulcimers will be provided.

ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS CAN RENEW LICENSES: College of The Albemarle is offering an electrical contractor's license renewal II class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in room 129 of the C building.
The class will be taught by Edenton resident Leslie Kirby. The cost is $35 for the course, plus $6.36 for the test and $24.38 for an updated test book.
