TOP LADY PROS WILL BRING FIRST TOURNAMENT TO AREA SINCE 1989

The Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour will return to Hampton Roads for a summer stop in July.

This will come just three months after a regional event at the Naval Base.

The LPBT tourney will be held July 9-13 at Denbigh Lanes in the Sherwood Shopping Center in Newport News.

The tournament, which will be called the Quantum Technologies Old Dominion Open, will offer a $75,000 payout and will be televised on Prime Network.

The Northeast Region tournament concludes today at the Naval Base.

The fantasy games have now reached bowling.

A Fantasy Team Bowling Game has been devised by a company in Idaho and contestants will be accepted until June 25.

The competition will be based on the summer and fall tours of the Pro Bowlers Association and the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour.

A ``team'' will consist of 25 bowlers. Each bowler must be picked from different categories - the legends, veterans, super stars, hot hands, longshots, youngsters and even a you-never-know division.

The game will run for 13 weeks with monthly standings compiled by the sponsor. The cost is about $25.

Those interested in taking part can call 1-800-826-4349 or send a fax for information to (208) 522-5808.

Bowler of the Week honors go to George Ensor, who rolled the highest series ever in local tenpin league play.

Ensor posted an 848 series in the Tuesday Mixed Majors at Plaza Bowl, one pin higher than the area record shared by Gil Brown (1990), David Cupp (1993) and Robert Matson (1994).

To accomplish the feat he had to bowl a 300 in his third game - and he did it.

Ensor, stationed here in the Navy and a regional PBA Tour bowler who averages 214, opened with 290 and missed another perfect game when the No. 5 pin stood on his first pitch. He had 258 in his second game.

He broke the Plaza house record of 835 by Earl Stutz by 13 pins.

Only in three frames in the entire match did Ensor fail to strike.
