LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - PORTSMOUTH

Veterinarian praised

As a patron of an outstanding vet, Dr. Andrew F. Horner, who practices at the Airline Boulevard Veterinary Hospital, I take to task whomever was responsible for the April 9 Currents editorial cartoon about the cowering German shepherd.

Dr. Horner, for several years since assuming Dr. Gilbert's clinic, has made many house calls to my home to care for my two cats. He has seen to it that their shots are kept up and their nails are clipped. These cats are my constant companions as I am a semi-shut-in and don't drive. He never charges any additional fee for his valuable expertise. His entire staff is excellent and caring.

I couldn't help but call Carole, his assistant and secretary, on hearing the story on TV about an attempted hold-up. Also on seeing the well written article in The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star.

I think Dr. Horner deserves a lot of credit on saving his staff and assistant, plus, getting one more criminal behind bars.

April 21, 1995 Pleasant tax experience

We hear so much complaining about problems in dealing with local government agencies, I wanted to share a pleasant experience that I had recently with the Taylor Road branch of the Commissioner of the Revenue's office in Chesapeake.

I had gone there for assistance in preparing my Virginia state income tax return and was helped by Sandra Poole. Ms. Poole was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. She prepared my return and explained things to me that I did not understand. She even called to let me know she had found that I could receive an additional $80 refund.

So, to Ms. Poole, thank you very much for your help. When so often we feel like we are being brushed aside and that no one has the time or patience to help us, I enjoy knowing that there are hard working individuals who do their jobs proficiently and make people feel as though they are not an intrusion on their busy day.
