FLOYD E. BENTON

Floyd E. Benton, 71, died Sunday, April 23, 1995, at Albemarle Hospital.

He was a native of Portsmouth and a retired civil service sheetmetal worker. He was an active member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Benton was the son of the late H.A. and Laura Mills Benton and the widower of Iva Cox Benton.

Survivors include three stepsons, Curtis W. McHorney of Moyock, Kenneth J. McHorney of Chesapeake and William E. McHorney of Maple; two sisters, Thelma Jones and Helen Myers, both of Portsmouth; five brothers, H.A. Benton Jr. and L.W. Benton, both of Portsmouth, E.L. Benton, L.R. Benton and E.G. Benton, all of California; four grandchildren, Jo Waterman of Raleigh, Steven W. McHorney of Summitt, Ky., Cathy Rupe of Chesapeake and Craig Collins of Edenton; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, by the Rev. Frank Thigpen. Burial will follow in Snowden Cemetery, Maple. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the residence of William E. McHorney in Maple.
