Pier fishing along the northern beaches improved this weekend, with a variety of fish taken.
Avalon Pier anglers caught some croaker, toadfish, small blues and gray trout Saturday.
Other piers in the area reported small bottom fish and some speckled trout landings.
Fishing on Sunday wasn't quite as good, although anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier landed plenty of speckled trout and blues during the late afternoon. Piers reported scattered sea mullet and speckled trout taken Monday.
Pier fishermen on Hatteras Island caught toadfish and sea mullet at a steady rate during much of the weekend.
Rough seas slowed Sunday's fishing action from Rodanthe to Buxton, but fishing in the area improved Monday.
Some small blues, sea mullet and a few flounder have been taken in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Surf conditions have been a little too rough and dirty for trout fishing.
Sea mullet have been plentiful along the beach from Rodanthe to Frisco. Some tailor blues, mullet and a few puppy drum have been taken during the day at Cape Point.
At night, fishing for drum was super Friday with more than 100 fish beached. Action was poor Saturday and Sunday nights as the wind was from the wrong direction.
Offshore fishing was fair Saturday, southeast of Oregon Inlet. Charters landed some 20- to 40-pound yellowfin tuna, gaffer dolphin and a couple of wahoo. Blue water anglers off Hatteras caught a few tuna and plenty of dolphin Saturday.
Charter boat releases included a white marlin by the ``Wahoo,'' a blue marlin by ``Sea Creature,'' and a sailfish by ``Top Billing.''
No boats went offshore Sunday or Monday because of strong winds and rough seas.
The wind shift to the northeast over the weekend put a temporary halt to drum catches at Cape Point.
Look for a resumption as soon as the wind returns to the southwest.
The water temperature at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck Monday was 55 degrees. by CNB
