A police officer charged with perjury and grand larceny is suspected of taking $1,000 from a person who was arrested on a drug charge during a narcotics investigation in January.
That is the explanation that the Newport News Police Department gave Monday for the arrest of Police Officer Jason L. Diedrich.
Diedrich, a member of the Newport News Police Department for more than three years, was arrested early Sunday. He was released Sunday evening from the City Jail on a $10,000 bond, a jail spokesman said.
The grand larceny charge stems from a drug arrest Diedrich made that the court decided not to prosecute. When the suspect asked for the return of $1,000 that Diedrich allegedly seized at the time of the arrest, the suspect was told that the money was not available.
Police spent a week investigating Diedrich after the person complained about the missing money.
Police said they found that Diedrich may have lied to obtain a search warrant, which led to the perjury charge.
