Vencor Inc., a large operator of hospitals for the chronically ill, is buying Hillhaven Corp., the nation's second-biggest nursing home company, for $1.9 billion. The agreement comes after Hillhaven last month rejected a bid from rival Horizon Healthcare Corp. That prompted Hillhaven's largest shareholder, Tenet Healthcare Corp., to mount a proxy battle to force a sale. The Santa Monica, Calif.-based hospital chain owns 27 percent of Hillhaven. Hillhaven operates 363 nursing homes and related facilities in 36 states, including several facilities in South Hampton Roads. (Wire services) by CNB
