TERRY CONNELLY

Terry Connelly of Norfolk, a popular teacher and avid sailor, died on Tuesday, April 25, 1995.

A vivacious and caring person, she put great emphasis in her lifetime on her family, students and friends. With her husband of 34 years, Pat Connelly, she spent much time sailing the Chesapeake Bay in their sloop, Patter III. Last year they were co-commodores of the Norfolk Catalina 30 Club.

In her career as a teacher, she spent many off-duty hours in counseling with students and their parents. She was faculty sponsor of the Builders Club, a Kiwanis-backed club that provided service to the community. Terry served on numerous faculty committees and was an innovator in creative teaching. She collaborated with another teacher on documenting their school's efforts, which led to the school being recognized nationally as a Blue Ribbon School. A graduate of Old Dominion University, she also held a master of education from George Washington University. She taught for 18 years in the Norfolk school system, of which the last five were at Northside Middle School.

In addition to her husband, a retired Marine Lt. Colonel, Terry is survived by three sons, Patrick, Lieutenant in the Navy, stationed in Japan, Michael, Gunnersmate 2nd Class in the Coast Guard, now stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma, and Brian, 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, now in flight school in Alabama; her mother, Joanne Funk of Oregon; two sisters, Anne Trefz and Avery Funk; four brothers, David Funk, Thomas Funk, Deane Funk and Robert Funk; and five grandchildren, Patrick IV, Ryan, Timothy, Bridget and Tara.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel in Norfolk. The family will be available to greet friends there after the service. They request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the charity of their choice. Burial will be private, with her ashes sprinkled at sea.
