SALEM TAKES GAME TO TALLWOOD, 3-1

The Salem boys soccer team hopes its 3-1 victory Tuesday over Tallwood will give it the respect the players feel was deserving all along.

If it wasn't there before, the fourth-ranked Sun Devils certainly earned it against the No. 2 Lions.

Salem (9-2 overall, 4-0 in the Beach District) and First Colonial are now in a two-way tie for the early district lead - the Patriots having beaten Ocean Lakes, 5-0, coupled with a 1-1 tie between Cox and Kellam.

The Sun Devils took the action to Tallwood (8-2, 3-1) for much of the contest and finished with a 20-11 shooting edge.

Salem got on track three minutes into the first half, with Kevin Miller chipping in a looping shot from about 35 yards out that just barely got between the crossbar and the outstretched hands of Lions keeper Ernie Savage.

But Tallwood, playing without area leading scorer Danny McVey, tied it up two minutes later when Vaughn Gladwell found a loose ball in front of the goal and nailed a shot that ricocheted off a defender and past Salem's Chip Rohr.

But with about five minutes left in the half, Salem took the lead for good when Drew Moss nailed a rebounding ball into the upper right corner of the goal. Brandon Hughes had taken a pass from Eddie McDonald and fired a shot that Savage failed to handle, leaving Moss a clear line to the net.

``Our fourth-place ranking kind of got us fired up for this one,'' said Hughes. ``We just wanted it.''

McDonald rounded out the scoring 2 1/2 minutes into the second half, blasting in a loose ball left a few feet from the goal after Savage failed to clear a Hughes' throw-in.

``And our defense played great tonight, too'' McDonald said. ``They were trying to switch (the ball) all night and it didn't work.'' by CNB
