A man forced his way into an apartment and fatally stabbed a woman with a kitchen knife Wednesday, then drove to police headquarters and told authorities what had happened, investigators said.
Schubert Hilaire, 29, of the 1700 block of River Rock Arch, parked in a police-only lot at the headquarters building on Princess Anne Road about 11 a.m. and approached an officer returning from court.
He told officer Brent Burnette a woman had been stabbed in a second-floor apartment in the Green Run area and was badly hurt.
While Hilaire was taken inside to speak with detectives, officers were sent to the 1400 block of Saginaw Bay Court where they found 32-year-old Waynette C. Richelieu dead inside an apartment.
Hilaire was charged with first-degree murder and burglary with the intent to commit murder.
Police spokesman Mike Carey said Richelieu was home alone when the slaying happened. Her two children - ages 8 and 13 - were in school and her estranged husband had been deployed to Spain on a military assignment.
Hilaire and Richelieu fought after Hilaire forced his way through the front door and the woman was stabbed several times, Carey said.
