James H. Newton, 69, of the 6900 block of Pugh St., died April 27, 1995, in Veterans Administration Hospital, Hampton, Va.
Mr. Newton was born in Fountain, N.C., the son of Rufus and Lula B. Jones Edge. He was a sergeant in the Norfolk Police Department for 27 years, a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, and St. Paul Lodge (NU)71, Prince Hall F & A M. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Air Force serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta T. Newton; two sons, James T. Newton of Chesapeake and Ronney R. Newton of Norfolk; five sisters, Alice M. Joyner of Graham, N.C., Frances Cox of Irvington, N.C., Dorothy R. Hart of Suffolk, Mattie R. Graham and Gloria T. Edge, both of Rocky Mount, N.C.; three brothers, Rufus Edge, Jr. of Norfolk, Paul Edge of Chesapeake and Joseph Edge of Rocky Mount, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a loving daughter-in-law, Burnette M. Newton and 43 nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at Second Calvary Baptist Church, 2940 Corprew Ave., by the Rev. Geoffrey V. Guns. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Riddick Funeral Service, where the family will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
